We expect our parents to die before we do. Most of us agree that this is the “natural” order of things. Because of this assumption, people are often shocked by how deeply sad and even traumatized they feel when they lose a parent. They wonder why it takes so long to recover—how even months or years later the thought of Mom or Dad can cause them to burst into tears. This phenomenon happens for those who were close to their parents, those who were estranged, and those whose relationships were complicated. With the parent’s death, they feel a fundamental crack in their existence because this person, the one who knew them before they were born, is now gone.
I have spent much of my professional life counseling people grieving the loss of a parent. Through their stories I have learned that there is no single defining experience of grief, no rules for how it should be expressed or how long it should last. But in grieving the loss of our parents, each in our own ways, we journey those well tread roads and learn more about ourselves in the process. How to Survive the Loss of a Parent offers no high-minded rules for grieving. It is just a conversation and a sharing of the experiences of others that I hope will bring people solace and insight. Knowing we are not alone is one of the best ways to heal.

I lost my mom--and have felt lost. My therapist friend recommended it and I absolutely loved it! I intend to read it again as it reads more like a story filled with people I grew to care about more than a self help book... but in the process, it helped me. Offered me fabulous things to think about. My heart still aches but I feel like I'm not alone in my grief and somehow this helps.Product details

returned, not what I was looking for.
Highly recommended; I read it 3 times + gave copies to relatives + friends who lost family members; they also re-read multiple time... Recommended!
a great book - if you need it. but even non-grieving people can learn something about life here...
This book was recommended to me by my counselor. It has helped me navigate through my grief & see that not all grief is the same. Highly recommend for anyone who is struggling with the death of a parent.
saved my life.
A coworker gave this book to me when I lost a parent. It's amazing. Although I didn't have a lot of the issues discussed in the book (e.g., unfinished business or a damaged relationship you weren't able to reconcile), the things discussed were very relevant to me as I went through the grieving process. It applies to much more than surviving the loss of a parent. It applies to losing anyone close to you, or maybe I should say anyone who "should" have been close to you. For folks who had things they were never able to say or relationships they were never able to reconcile, it gives concrete ideas on what you can do to find closure. It's now the book I recommend to my friends as we start to go through this stage of life (i.e., losing parents).
It started out very helpful. I was really struggling with my loss and how people chose to respond to my loss. I felt like it was all so cliche. After the beginning of this book I realized it’s safer to be cliche because people could be worried about saying something specific that sets you off. So the book was worth it to me to gain that understanding but I really got bored reading the individual stories.
